On Wednesday, intercessors of all walks of life, politicians, youth ministers, business people, prayer ministries, missionaries, and pastors came to stand in the gap before God and pray for the world. The world was divided into nine regions, each to be held up in prayer for one hour. Many of the regions had representatives present who asked for specific prayers for needs in their region (See attached page for specific prayers).
The President Prayer Breakfast was held on Thursday. Rep. Steve Largent, the Chairperson of this years event, explained that the breakfast began some 47 years ago, as a time when the House and Senate met to pray for the President. This event is not now nor has it ever been a political event. It is a promise of prayer, of unity and spiritual renewal that only God can bring.
An audience of more than 3,000, including representatives from all fifty states, 160 countries, and the attendees of the National Prayer Summit, listened to Bible readings and prayed along with the many prayers of the distinguished panel of speakers. In a prayer offered by Senator Joseph Lieberman he publicly prayed for President Clinton, for God to "restore his soul and lead it in the paths of righteousness". He also called on religious and political leaders to help President Clinton "heal the breach, to begin the reconciliation and restore our national soul".
Ray Bringham, founder of the National Prayer Summit, and a group of intercessors were allowed to use one of the Senate rooms in the U.S. Capital to pray during the afternoon hours while the Impeachment hearings were taking place. Mr. Bringham pointed out that most Christians are guilty of criticizing and judging Mr. Clinton when we should have been praying for his repentance.
Friday was another awesome day of praise and prayer. It was set aside as a "Day of Prayer For America". Many well-known Christian leaders, writers, and ministers gave testimonies, sang songs of praise and prayed.
An exciting youth-led Prayer Walk around the White House took place during the afternoon. Special prayers were prayed for todays youth, that there would be a rising up of Christian youth to lead others to the Lord and to change America. An evening Celebration Service "Blessed is the Nation Whose God Is the Lord" and prayers concluded the 1999 National Prayer Summit.
Gods mighty presence could be felt during these three days of humbling praise and prayers. If we as Christians read and keep His word then, God, as always will keep his promises. "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." II Chronicles 7:14
